Understanding the difference between public and private utilities is key to safe digging. Public utility lines typically run from the street to your meter, while private utilities extend from the meter to other locations on your property. Examples of private utilities include: sprinkler systems, gas lines for pools or grills, electrical wiring to detached garages or sheds, and septic or irrigation lines.
While utility companies mark their underground lines, they only locate utilities within their right-of-ways. For areas beyond the meter on private property, you’ll need to hire a private utility locating service to identify and mark these underground lines.
In the picture below, solid lines represent public utilities, and dotted lines show private utilities.
