Farms make up 25% of land in South Carolina. Gas transmission lines and vital fiber optics lines can often run through agricultural farmland. If either of this lines is damaged it could have catastrophic impact.
The Underground Facility Damage Prevention Act requires that South Carolina 811 be notified anytime a farmer has to dig deeper than 12 inches for agricultural purposes.
Farmers often don’t utilize the 811 system because they assume they “know where the lines are” or they are “not going that deep.” However, notifying SC811 is the law AND it is a free service to have the underground utility line marked before any type of excavation, including plowing, tilling, fencing, ditching, terracing, etc.
